IELTS Listening Test Format: Parts, Questions and Timing

Official IELTS information describes four parts with 10 questions in each part. Parts one and two use everyday social situations, while parts three and four focus on educational or training contexts.

The questions follow the order of information in the recording. This helps you recover because the next answer normally appears after the previous one.

You hear each recording one time only. Before it begins, use the available reading time to identify keywords, predict the answer type and notice word limits.

If you miss an answer, move your attention forward. Continuing to think about the missed detail can cause several more errors.

Part one is usually a conversation in an everyday context. Part two is usually one speaker discussing a social situation. Part three commonly involves an educational discussion, and part four is an academic monologue.

The language and density generally become more demanding. Your practice should therefore include both factual details and longer explanations.

Official materials include multiple choice, matching, plan or map labelling, form completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, summary completion, sentence completion and short answers.

Read the instruction before the options. Word-limit mistakes can lose a mark even when you understood the recording.

IELTS warns that incorrect spelling and grammar can cost marks. Before listening, use the words around a gap to predict whether you need a noun, number, date, adjective or another form.

After entering an answer, make sure it fits the sentence and follows the stated word limit.

Complete a section without pausing, review every error with the transcript when available and label the cause: missed synonym, lost position, spelling, distractor or instruction mistake.

Repeat the same question family later with a new recording. Improvement comes from correcting the process, not memorising one audio.
