IELTS Listening Score: Raw Marks to Band Explained

Official IELTS guidance gives average reference points: around 16 correct answers for Band 5, 23 for Band 6, 30 for Band 7 and 35 for Band 8.

These are not guaranteed boundaries for every test version. Use them to interpret practice trends rather than predict an official result exactly.

Different test versions must remain comparable even when individual question sets vary slightly in difficulty. That is why IELTS describes the published raw-score figures as averages.

A simulator can estimate a band from practice answers, but only an official IELTS result is authoritative.

Track a rolling set of scores instead of reacting to one attempt. Record the raw score, estimated band, question types missed and whether the test was completed under realistic conditions.

Three timed attempts provide a more useful trend than one unusually strong or weak result.

The official average reference moves from about 23 correct answers at Band 6 to about 30 at Band 7. That gap should be broken into error categories rather than treated as seven identical mistakes.

Identify whether marks are lost through vocabulary, distractors, spelling, word limits, maps or losing position in the recording. Practise the largest category first.

For every mock test, save the date, raw score out of 40, estimated band, completion conditions, three repeated errors and one focus for the next session.

Retake a full mock after targeted practice to see whether the change transfers to a new recording.
