IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 Structure: 4-Part Plan

Use four parts: introduction, overview, detail paragraph one and detail paragraph two. The exact grouping depends on the visual, so treat the plan as a decision framework rather than a memorised template.

Official IELTS guidance recommends spending about 20 minutes on Task 1 and writing at least 150 words.

State what the visual shows using accurate paraphrasing. Include the subject, place or period when these are provided.

Do not copy the prompt word for word, and do not add causes or opinions that the visual does not support.

The overview summarises the most important trends, stages or contrasts without listing every number. It should allow the reader to understand the big picture.

For a process, mention the start, end and major stages. For charts, identify overall rises, falls, peaks, lows or dominant categories.

Divide the important data into two meaningful groups. You might group early and later periods, high and low categories, or similar trends.

Support comparisons with selected figures. Avoid describing every data point in the order it appears.

Use roughly three minutes to analyse and group the information, about 14 minutes to write, and the final three minutes to check accuracy, units and grammar.

Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the Writing score, so protect the larger share of the 60-minute Writing test for Task 2.

Common problems include a missing overview, opinions not supported by the visual, ungrouped lists of numbers, copied prompt language and details that use incorrect units.

Check content before vocabulary. A sophisticated sentence cannot repair an inaccurate comparison.

Confirm that you wrote at least 150 words, included an overview, selected the main features, grouped details logically, used correct units and avoided personal opinions.

Then review repeated grammar patterns and whether comparisons are precise.
