IELTS Writing Task 2: Essay Structure for Band 7+

IELTS Writing Task 2 is one of the most important parts of the IELTS exam. It is also one of the sections where many students lose marks because their ideas are not clearly organised.

To get Band 7 or higher, you need more than good grammar. You need a clear essay structure. A strong IELTS Writing Task 2 essay usually has four paragraphs: introduction, body paragraph 1, body paragraph 2 and conclusion.

Your essay is assessed using four criteria: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.

Your introduction should paraphrase the question and give your position or outline the essay. Do not write a long introduction. Two sentences are usually enough.

While academic knowledge is essential, I believe schools should also teach practical skills because they prepare students for real-life challenges.

Your first body paragraph should discuss one side of the argument or your first main point.

A good body paragraph includes a topic sentence, explanation, example and a result or link back to the question.

Example: Supporters of academic-focused education argue that subjects such as mathematics, science and literature provide the foundation for future study and professional success. These subjects develop critical thinking and give students the qualifications they need to enter university or specialised careers.

Your second body paragraph should present the other side or your strongest opinion.

Example: However, practical skills are also necessary because many students leave school without knowing how to manage money, communicate effectively or make informed decisions. These skills are useful in almost every area of adult life, regardless of a person's career path.

Your conclusion should summarise your answer and repeat your opinion in different words.

Example: In conclusion, academic subjects are important because they provide students with essential knowledge and qualifications. However, practical skills should also be taught at school, as they help young people become more independent and better prepared for adult life.

Writing without a clear opinion. If the question asks for your opinion, make it clear.

Adding too many ideas. It is better to develop two strong ideas than to list five weak ones.

Using memorised phrases unnaturally. Clear and natural English is better.

Forgetting examples. Examples help make your ideas more specific and convincing.

Use this formula: Introduction = paraphrase + opinion. Body 1 = first view or first main idea. Body 2 = second view or your opinion. Conclusion = summary + final opinion.

This structure works well for many IELTS question types, including discuss both views, agree or disagree, advantages and disadvantages, problem and solution, and two-part questions.
