IELTS Score Requirements by Country and Visa (2026)
Most people do not take IELTS for fun. They take it because a visa, a university offer or a professional licence depends on it, and each of those has its own minimum score. The catch is that requirements are written per skill, not just as an overall band, and the rules changed in several countries in 2025 and 2026. This guide puts the main requirements side by side and links to the official page for each one, so you know exactly which score you are training for.

IELTS requirements at a glance
The table below shows the minimum IELTS result for the most common immigration and registration routes. Where a programme converts IELTS to another scale (CLB in Canada, CEFR in the UK), the IELTS figure is the one you need in every skill unless the table says otherwise.
| Goal | Test | Minimum IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| Canada Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker) | General Training | CLB 7: 6.0 in each skill |
| Canada PGWP, university degree | General Training | CLB 7: 6.0 in each skill |
| Canadian citizenship (age 18 to 54) | General Training | Speaking 4.0, Listening 4.5 |
| UK Skilled Worker visa (new applicants) | IELTS for UKVI | B2: 5.5 in each skill |
| UK Student visa, degree level | IELTS for UKVI | B2: 5.5 in each skill |
| Australia, Competent English | Academic or General Training | 6 in each skill |
| Australia, Proficient English (10 points) | Academic or General Training | 7 in each skill |
| Australia, Superior English (20 points) | Academic or General Training | 8 in each skill |
| New Zealand Skilled Migrant (principal applicant) | Academic or General Training | 6.5 overall |
| UK nursing (NMC) | Academic | 7 in L, R, S and 6.5 in Writing |
| Australia nursing (NMBA) | Academic | 7 overall, 7 in L, R, S and 6.5 in Writing |
Use this as a map, not as legal advice. Immigration rules change, and the official page always wins. Each row has a detailed guide below with the source.
Why your lowest band matters more than your overall score
Almost every immigration route sets a minimum for each of the four skills. An overall 7.0 with a 5.5 in Writing does not meet a requirement of 6.0 in every skill. In Australia, for example, Home Affairs decides your English level from your lowest component, so one weak skill can cost you points.
That changes how you should prepare. Find your weakest skill early with a timed practice test, then spend most of your time there. Our IELTS listening score calculator and the IELTS Writing band descriptors explain how each skill is scored.
Academic or General Training: pick the right test first
Booking the wrong module is an expensive mistake. Canada's economic immigration programmes accept only IELTS General Training. Universities and health regulators usually ask for IELTS Academic. Australia and New Zealand accept either for most visas. The UK asks for an IELTS for UKVI test at an approved centre.

Detailed guides by country and goal
New Zealand in brief
Immigration New Zealand asks principal applicants for skilled residence visas for an overall IELTS score of 6.5, Academic or General Training. Partners and dependent children aged 16 or over need a lower level. Results must come from a test sat in person at a test centre, and at-home tests are not accepted. Check the Immigration New Zealand English requirements for skilled residence visas for the current rules.
Test format rules that catch people out
- Australia does not accept English tests delivered completely online, including IELTS Online. Book a test at a secure centre.
- Canada does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry. Australia accepts One Skill Retake for eligible visas.
- Express Entry results must be less than two years old when you create your profile and when you submit your permanent residence application.
- The UK needs a Secure English Language Test (SELT). For IELTS, that means IELTS for UKVI at an approved centre.
Most of these tests are now taken on a computer. If you have only practised on paper, read computer-based IELTS vs paper and get used to the screen before test day.
Plan your preparation around the target
Write your target per skill, not just overall. Take a timed diagnostic, compare each skill with the target, and build your study plan around the biggest gap. Our guide to preparing for IELTS online has a four-week plan, and the full IELTS mock test lets you rehearse all three computer-delivered sections in one sitting.
IELTS questions answered
What IELTS score do I need for immigration?
It depends on the country and programme. Canada Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker) needs CLB 7, which is IELTS General Training 6.0 in each skill. Australia's Competent English is 6 in each skill. New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category needs 6.5 overall for the principal applicant. The UK Skilled Worker visa needs CEFR B2, which is 5.5 in each skill on IELTS for UKVI.
Is IELTS required for every country?
No. Many programmes accept other tests such as CELPIP, PTE or TOEFL, and some applicants are exempt by nationality or previous study in English. Check the official page for your visa before booking.
Do immigration authorities look at my overall band or each skill?
Most look at each skill. A high overall band does not help if one skill falls below the minimum.
