IELTS for Canada PR: CLB Chart and Express Entry Scores (2026)

IRCC accepts IELTS General Training for Express Entry. IELTS Academic is not accepted for these programmes, and IRCC states that it does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry.

Your results must be less than two years old on the day you create your Express Entry profile and on the day you submit your permanent residence application. If they expire in between, the application can be refused, so plan your test date around both moments.

This is the conversion IRCC publishes for your first official language. Listening needs a higher band than the other skills at CLB 8 and above, which surprises many candidates.

Each skill is converted separately. A result of Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.0 is CLB 8 in Listening and CLB 9 in the other three, not CLB 9 overall.

These are entry requirements. Meeting them makes you eligible to enter the pool; it does not make you competitive.

Language is one of the few CRS factors you can still change after you apply. IRCC's CRS criteria award points for each skill at each CLB level, and CLB 9 also unlocks extra skill-transferability points when combined with education or foreign work experience.

In IELTS terms, CLB 9 means Listening 8.0 and 7.0 in Reading, Writing and Speaking. Listening 8.0 is the band most candidates find hardest, because one more mistake can drop you to 7.5 and CLB 8. Check the official CRS criteria for the current points values before you plan.

• Take a timed Listening test first. Listening needs the highest band for CLB 9, so it decides how much time you need.
• Practise Writing against the official criteria. General Training Task 1 is a letter, but Task 2 is the same essay type as Academic; our IELTS Writing Task 2 structure guide applies directly.
• Practise on a computer if you will sit computer-delivered IELTS. Typing, scrolling and the on-screen timer change your pace.
• Retake the full test if one skill misses: One Skill Retake does not count for Express Entry.

A note on our practice tests: IELTSimulator's Listening tests follow the same format as General Training Listening. Our Reading and Writing tests use the Academic format, so use them for timing, screen familiarity and Task 2 essays, and use official General Training samples for the letter and the General Training reading texts.

• Booking IELTS Academic. It is not accepted for Express Entry, and the fee is not refunded because you picked the wrong module.
• Planning for an overall band. IRCC converts each skill separately, so an overall 7.5 can still be CLB 8 if Listening is 7.5.
• Letting results expire. A result that is valid when you enter the pool can expire before you are invited. Note the two-year date in your calendar.
• Counting on One Skill Retake. It does not count for Express Entry, so a weak skill means a full retake.
• Ignoring the second official language. French results can add points on top of English; check the CRS criteria if you have any French.

• Week 1: one full timed test to find the gap. If your Listening is 7.5, you may be only a few answers short of 8.0.
• Week 2: Listening every day with one play only, and review every wrong answer against the transcript. Add two Task 2 essays.
• Week 3: alternate Writing and Reading under time. For Writing 7.0, the band descriptors show what separates 6.5 from 7.
• Week 4: two full mock tests on a computer, then rest before test day.
